These are gathered by hand in the villages surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.The sturdy Eshingye (deer grass) forms the framework of the bowl. It is sturdy enough to retain its shape for years. The delicate patterns and decorations, on the other hand, are created using Obuhivu (raffia). This grass is softer and therefore ideal for weaving the intricate details.Plant-based dyes derived from roots, leaves and herbs are used for colouring. As each piece is dyed slightly differently, no two pieces are alike.

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, thrives in dry regions and is therefore also grown in Africa’s arid climate. It is cultivated by small-scale producers and harvested in the wild, rather than being grown in traditional fields. The dried and ground roots are then processed into powder and packaged at Kazi Yetu’s women-led factory.

Moringa contains, amongst other things, vitamins A and C, iron and all nine essential amino acids. Moringa is native to India, but is now also cultivated by small-scale producers in the subtropical arid regions of Tanzania. After harvesting, the moringa leaves are dried and then ground into a fine powder using hand-operated grain mills. The moringa powder is packaged at the women-run Kazi Yetu factory in Dar es Salaam.

Seaweed naturally contains iodine, amino acids, vitamins and trace elements, and is one of Zanzibar’s most important economic sectors. Seaweed is mainly cultivated by so-called seaweed farmers (Kiswahili for ‘Wakulima wa Mwani’). The seaweed grows in the warm, salty, shallow waters of the Indian Ocean. It is tied with ropes to wooden stakes driven into the seabed. The fields are only visible at low tide.

A caffeine-free herbal tea made from lemon verbena, ginger and rosemary – brewed hot or as a refreshing iced tea.This tea comes from our friends at Kazi Yetu in Tanzania. At their own tea factory in Dar es Salaam, every tin is filled and packed by hand by a team of local female staff – the women know each blend inside out because they put them together themselves. Kazi Yetu is a recognised supplier to Fair Trade shops.The pyramid tea bags are made from maize starch. The tea tin is made from cardboard with a food-safe inner coating and can be refilled using one of Kazi Yetu’s refill packs.

Njoro, Kenya: This cuddly MONKEY is made entirely by hand here – knitted by a single knitter, stitch by stitch.Since 1998, over 300 knitters from rural village communities around Njoro have found work and a steady income at Kenana Knitters. The processing of virgin wool (sheep’s wool) plays a special role in this: converted bicycle wheels serve as spinning wheels, on which the wool is spun by hand into yarn before being crafted, piece by piece, into a unique item such as this monkey.

Each soft toy is lovingly handcrafted from high-quality wool. The wool is spun into yarn by hand – using recycled bicycle wheels that have been converted into spinning wheels.
