Support for School Projects

Which projects are supported?

The sale of Kipepeo products supports the schools where the respective designs were created. Support is provided following consultation with local subject specialists and teaching staff, and is allocated according to need – for example, by covering school fees, providing school supplies, or funding the renovation or construction of new school buildings. After all, the local people working on the (school) projects know best what is needed.

You can find all the projects we have completed since 2008 on our timeline.

How a construction project works and is funded

The projects on the ground are managed and budgeted by our partner organisation, Starkids Kenya. If a building is to be renovated or newly constructed, our Kenyan architect first draws up a construction plan and timetable tailored to local conditions and infrastructure. The building plans are then submitted to the local authorities for review. Once the (building) permit has been granted, we work with Starkids Kenya to calculate the costs for building materials, transport, labour, site management and administration.

Once all costs have been finalised, our funding phase begins. The costs are covered by the sale of the relevant Kipepeo T-shirts – often supplemented by a crowdfunding campaign, depending on the economic situation, as T-shirt sales fluctuate. Depending on the scale of the project, it usually takes 3 to 4 years to sell enough T-shirts of a particular design to fund a project.

Interesting facts: In the early years (2009–2013), the proceeds from sales were mainly used to pay for school fees and school supplies. Over time, we have moved towards implementing projects that benefit the whole school as much as possible. The construction of a kitchen block in 2022 is a good example of this: thanks to this project, meals can now be prepared under hygienic conditions for 350 pupils.
