BAISIKELI V.2 Women’s Shirt, Dark Green

Product information "BAISIKELI V.2 Women’s Shirt, Dark Green"

Is it a bicycle, a balance bike or perhaps a motorbike? We’re not sure, but we thought BAISIKELI (bicycle in Kiswahili) was the loveliest name for this little work of art, the original drawing of which, dating from 2018, measures just under 2 cm. The drawing was created following a school trip organised by the ‘Songa Mbele Na Masomo’ Children’s Centre to Nairobi’s most beautiful urban forest – the Karura Forest. After the trip, the pupils at this full-time residential centre for children with special needs drew what they had enjoyed most, and some of the children were clearly particularly fascinated by the bustling streets with their countless different modes of transport, such as buses, motorbikes and cars. Proceeds from the sale of this T-shirt and other designs created at the ‘Songa Mbele Na Masomo’ Children’s Centre were used to build a new wall around the school playground and construct paths that separate the centre from the neighbouring slum and make the playground accessible all year round, even for children in wheelchairs.

Did you know

The drawings of various vehicles inspired the ‘Kipepeo Goes Kenya’ campaign, in which Martin and Sam from Kipepeo hitchhiked from Stuttgart to Nairobi, raising awareness of the new project along the way. Their journey was documented in the film of the same name, ‘Kipepeo Goes Kenya’. You can find the film in our media library.

Production

Like every Kipepeo T-shirt, the BAISIKELI T-shirt is produced over a distance of just 600 km by owner-managed family businesses in Tanzania and Kenya: the organically grown cotton is cultivated in Singida (Tanzania) on small-scale rain-fed farms, without artificial irrigation, and is harvested by hand. In Tanzania, this cotton is knitted into a high-quality, slightly heavier jersey fabric and dyed to our specifications in a beautiful dark green. The fabric is then transformed into a handcrafted, high-quality T-shirt in our small sewing workshop in Nairobi, where it is cut, sewn and printed by hand using water-based screen-printing inks.
